The cost of studying Judo

Judo is a very low cost activity. Virtually anyone can afford to participate.
As this activity is run on a non-profit voluntary basis

- The current tuition for our high level of instruction is only $5/hour (based on $120/ 3 months for beginners : $150/3 months for advanced students).
- Family tuition (2 or more) drops that by 20% to $4/hour and,
- VIJA sponsors employees pay 20% less again.

We charge a flat $75 annual fee to cover a required membership in Judo BC which, governed by Sport BC, provides liability insurance. This also covers the cost of grading and acquiring higher levels of belts to reflect a students rise in proven ability.

The cost of the Judo uniform (called a Judogi) runs $40-70 based on size. Judogi typically last for many years.

While a significant cross-section of Nanaimo residents can't afford comprehensive training in many sporting or leisure activities, judo is definitely affordable for most.

We encourage members, parents, and everyone interested in judo to sign up for our newsletter. VIJA sends out periodical mailings about tournements, schedules, news, and philosophy.
