VIJA Philosophy and Purpose
We are inclusive. We welcome all Judoka (students, young & old, male & female) as well as practitioners of other martial arts to join us for training, for our society’s ‘mutual welfare and benefit’ in keeping with the vision of the founder of Judo, Professor Jigoro Kano. Whatever one’s affiliation or style there is much we can learn from each other as we aim to ‘shine together’.
While Judoka will learn an activity, or art, that has a competitive nature these days (Judo became an Olympic sport in 1964) we work to emphasize a whole-body physical and mental training, the perfection of technique, the knowledge of Judo history, etiquette, philosophy and terminology. Contests are voluntary and are only to affirm the success of the training.
Our purpose is to help build ‘fine people’ not simply to win competitions. Judo is far more than just competition or another sport.
Ju-Do, translates to ‘gentle’ and, ‘path or way’. This activity, while very physical, allows us to learn a gentle way to use our power and technique to build strength and balance. It helps toward developing character and a path or way of living for mutual welfare and benefit in society.
Judo is to be gentle smooth movements, soft, quick and safe for all ages. This comes from a relaxed mind and body, free from anxieties and illnesses, helping to build up strength and purpose.
The gentle child who studies Judo with dedication, will progress steadily through the rank structure and stand as an equal on the Judo mat with a man two or three time his or her size. Why is this? Because both are students of the activity of Judo and both are respected and recognized for the quality of their art and effort. One is not despised because he is weaker or smaller, nor the other regarded because he is bigger or stronger. We all learn to grow and develop together.
The training of the Judoka takes place through hard work and practice of their technique, and not in the weight room where they might make up for lack of technique and practice. At the VIJA, Judoka must learn a whole set of various techniques, in a relaxed manner until they are second nature. All power must come from the excellence of the technique in its timing and correct method of application.
Maximum Efficiency – Minimum Effort, Mutual Welfare and Benefit
Literally: You and I shining together
